We Need To Talk About Daniel Radcliffe’s Use Of Social Media

This is Daniel Radcliffe. He is the only person* on Google+.

*This is not technically true. But it feels true.

Daniel Radcliffe once told Marc Maron on WTF With Marc Maron that he doesn’t have social media – except for Google+.

Marc Maron: Did you already get feedback on [your appearance on ESPN]?

Daniel Radcliffe: Well I don’t have social media, so I don’t know.

MM: You just detach from that?

DR: Yeah, I have a Google+, but for me it just seems like….there’s that…

MM: Let me understand something: You don’t need to self-promote at this point, Daniel? [Laughs]

DR: I probably do! I’m constantly being told – whenever I do a junket, somebody’s like ‘Can you get social media for us?’ And I’m just like ‘I don’t…”

When you look for DanRad on Facebook and Twitter, fanpages and unverified accounts abound.

Sometime you’ll get an appearance from a movie Radcliffe is in.

Meanwhile, here is the banner on his Google+.

(The still is from Swiss Army Man, that movie where he plays a farting corpse.)

He posts there fairly frequently.

He uses it like many celebs use their social media accounts. To promote trailers…

To give us behind-the-scenes glimpses of the daily grind…

Sometimes even to mourn dearly beloved friends and colleagues…

But he only ever posts these things to Google+. Not Instagram. Not Facebook. Not Twitter. Google+.

His aversion to social media is hardly new – he explained as much to Maron in that November interview:

“I never hear somebody talking about it who’s happy about it. I never hear somebody saying, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to check my Twitter!’….It’s not, like, an act of social rebellion. Like, I don’t give a shit if you have Twitter. I don’t have strong feelings about it. As long as you’re not being a dick, you can do anything you like. But, like, the other day somebody said to me… they were talking about Snapchat, and they were like, ‘How can you not have Snapchat?’ and I was like, ‘I just don’t have it!'””

Plenty of celebs don’t touch social media.

But DanRad has social media – it’s just only Google+.

Does he just not count it as social media? Does he like it because it’s relatively out of the fray? What is happening?

I mean, you do you, Daniel.

You rock that Google+.
