10 Hip Hop Crews You Wish You Were A Part Of

1. Young Money

Key players: Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Mack Maine, Birdman, Christina Milian, Paris Hilton, and Lil Twist.
Major song: “BedRock,” a group effort that went three times platinum in the US
Why we want in: The Young Money crew has released seven chart-topping albums in the US and are the inventors of YOLO. Who could ask for anything more?
Upcoming plans: Young Money, Cash Money, and their frequent collaborators are set to release a compilation album titled Rich Gang: Flashy Lifestyle on July 23, 2013.

2. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All

Key players: Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, and over 60 others.
Major song: “Oldie,” off the album The OF Tape Vol. 2 that reached #1 on the US Billboard Top Rap Albums.
Why we want in: Acting like a real family, the crew was fully supportive when member, Frank Ocean, came out of the closet last year. Tyler, the Creator said he always knew Ocean was different because “…he likes Pop Tarts without frosting on them.”
Upcoming plans: Earl Sweatshirt’s New album Doris drops Aug. 20, 2013 and will feature crew-mates Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, and Domo among others.

3. G.O.O.D. Music

Key players: Kanye West, John Legend, Pusha T, Mos Def, Big Sean, and Teyana Taylor.
Major song: “Mercy,” the premiere single from the crew’s joint effort Cruel Summer, that debuted at #2 on the US Billboard 200.
Why we want in: The crew has released seven records that have been certified gold or higher. Also, you would probably get to meet baby North West before the rest of the world!
Upcoming plans: New albums from Big Sean, John Legend, Pusha T, and Teyana Taylor in 2013. A few of the crew’s members have also hinted at a follow up compilation record titled Cruel Winter sometime this year.

4. D12

Key players: Eminem, Kuniva, Bizzare, and the late Proof and Bugz.
Major song: “My Band,” the crew’s most successful single based on the misconception that Eminem was the lead singer of the D12 band.
Why we want in: The crew has stayed strong through a series of unfortunate events, including the loss of two of it’s members and Eminem’s struggle with sobriety.
Upcoming plans: The rumor online is that Eminem is set to drop his eighth studio album sometime this year.

5. Maybach Music

Key players: Rick Ross, Wale, Meek Mill, French Montana, and the former B2K frontman, Omarion.
Major song: Ross’s “Bag of Money” off the compilation album Self Made Vol. 2 that went #1 on the US Billboard Top Rap Albums.
Why we want in: The crew is known for their collaborations and already have two compilation records under their belt. And lets be real, that belt is probably Gucci.
Upcoming plans: The crew’s third compilation album, Self Made Vol. 3 drops Aug. 6, 2013.

6. Wu Tang Clan

Key players: RZA, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
Major song: Since the amazing success of their first single, Protect Ya Neck, Wu Tang has had three platinum selling albums collectively.
Why we want in: The Wu Tang Clan has been together for twenty years and still perform together to this day. If twenty years from now Wutang goes on a retirement home tour… we call shotgun on the bus!
Upcoming plans: This January the clan announced via Facebook that they were working on a sixth Wu-Tang Clan album due out sometime this year in honor of their 20th anniversary.

7. A$AP Mob

Key players: A$AP Rocky, A$AP Yams, A$AP Bari, A$AP Ferg, and anything else with an A$AP in front of it.
Major song: Rocky’s “F**kin’ Problems” that climbed to the #2 spot on both the US Billboard Rap and R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
Why we want in: The A$AP crew is like a well-oiled-machine with each member having a specific role. Some deal with management, some with fashion, and others produce.
Upcoming plans: With Rocky’s success on the charts, the crew’s new project is A$AP Ferg, whose first mixtape is set to drop this August.

8. Purple Ribbon All-Stars

Key players: Big Boi, Killer Mike, and Sleepy Brown. The crew is often graced by the presence of tuxedo extraordinaire and R&B cutie Janelle Monae.
Major song: “Kryptonite (I’m on It).” The remix also features Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, Bubba Sparxxx and Remy Ma.
Why we want in: The crew came together when Big Boi saw the opportunity in taking musical acts that were dropped from other labels because they didn’t fit the mold and letting them run wild on these records.
Upcoming plans: Monae’s The Electric Lady will be out this September and Killer Mike’s I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind IV is slated for a 2014 release.

9. Ruff Ryders

Key players: Founders Dee & Wahh Dean, Swizz Beats, DMX, Eve, Jadakiss, and Styles P.
Major song: “Ryde or Die,” the lead single on the crew’s chart-topping first compilation album Ryde or Die Vol. 1
Why we want in: While not together any longer, the crew that held down the hip-hop game in the late 90’s has spawned an impressive amount of solo careers. Ryde till we die… or break up! Whichever comes first…
Upcoming plans: After the Ruff Ryders split up, its original founders decided to rebrand and create Ruff Ryders Indy, a label focused on fostering new hip-hop talent.

10. Black Hippy

Key players: Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock
Major song: Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank)” Remix (that features the rest of the Black Hippy crew) is his highest charting single on both the US and UK charts.
Why we want in: This west coast crew is so tight that though they frequently collaborate on each other’s records, they don’t feel the need to be credited. Ah, friends doing favors for friends, how cute!
Upcoming plans: Each of the four crew members plans to release an individual project before they put out anything under the Black Hippy name.
